HDR is a treatment modality. Specifically, HDR is high-dose-rate remote afterloading brachytherapy.
Partial Breast Irradiation (PBI), a treatment technique, is appealing to many people because of the shorter treatment time (1 week versus 6 or 7 weeks for whole breast radiation. If you need to have radiation therapy, it’s easier to rearrange your daily routine for 1 week compared to almost 2 months. This also means a more convenient radiation treatment plan for people who would have to travel far distances to get to a cancer treatment center. MammoSite® and SenoRx® are PBI HDR applicators.
Even though five years is a short follow-up time, the highest risk for the cancer coming back in the same breast is in the first five years.
